Shows Wrap-Up

Of course none of this was true, however from watching so many criminal mind episodes I was playing my life out as a character in one of them. This proves my theory that what you see on television really carries over into what you think the real world is like. I cannot tell you how many arguments there have been stating that video games and scary movies actually ruin and manipulate the mind of young children and adults alike. This was a small example of just how that happens inside the mind of an average person. What you see on television plays a drastic role in what you think and believe to be true. This week I wanted to explain to you just how these shows affect people and their belief systems and how children watching these shows from a young age will be greatly affected!

I have chosen every week to pick a new show I find interesting and fitting to the title television horrors. Through the weeks I have touched on a variety of different shows and genre's such as children's shows, horror shows, disney movies and much more. These shows have shown me over a period of time that the affects they hold on their demographic can be tremendous. For example, while trying to fall asleep the other night I was scared there was someone in my house. Mind you when arriving back from thanksgiving break my screens were completely shifted off of my windows as if someone had tried breaking in. With that being said it was on my subconscious that someone was interested in getting into my apartment for one reason or another. After trying to fall asleep for an hour I felt as though I could hear noises coming from in my living room and kitchen. Although, I was almost sure it was in my head my mind ran wild. I pictured a man under my bed waiting for my to fall asleep and more than that a man hiding in some closet.

If my followers could take anything away from these posts it would simply be to think about what your watching on television and just how it is affecting the over population and culture of the present.

Criminal Minds Dilemma

Criminal Minds tv show photo
As you all know I took a bit of a turn with last week's blog. I started to write about a show I actually liked on television versus shows that seem to be to riskay for our generation and generations to come. With this week's blog I am also going to give both sides of the story and allow my viewers to choose their own path. There seem to be many episodes I just cannot get enough of watching while others leave me with the shivers. WHERE ARE ALL MY DETECTIVES?? These types of shows let you get a sneak peak into just what our FBI agents do while on the job. They do not have set hours; they work the case until it is completed.

Criminal minds keeps you on the edge of your seat and allows you to feel like your are hunting the unsubs yourself. Whether you are interested in this line of work or simply enjoy watching others get the bad guy these serial shows keep you watching. I am such an avid fan I keep the DVR recording every week's new episode just so I can watch it if I fall asleep. This is the case with most people I know. We all highly enjoy these types of shows. As you can see Criminal Minds is a favorite. While keeping their audience completely entertained with wild chases there is a story line which unravels within all the characters that just adds to the suspense.

The pit fall to this show is that it puts the idea of terrible things into the minds of its viewers. For example, I was watching an episode last night that was just outrageous. Men were creeping into girls windows at night while they were babysitting and triggering the house alarm and scaring them until near death. They would leave the children unharmed but leave a terrible surprise for the parents when they returned home to see the babysitter. This scared me into thinking any time I babysit in the near future this could be a possibility. Although, critics would say that is your choice and this is just for ratings it is my sole belief that you do what you see on television. Studies have shown since video games, television shows and movies have become so violent so has our society. Between ideas they generate from these shows and games and the way they feel the world is based on its appearance people all over the world are acting out to what they see. These episodes could be fueling anyone out there to do the unthinkable while also making other viewers afraid of their own shadow.

Although I am an avid fan Criminal minds has kept me looking over my shoulder. Is this show something you find to be a threat or simply interesting to watch? Or do you feel both sides occur? Please respond and let me know what you think!

American Horror Story

You're going to die in there

Hey everyone! I am changing it up this week! Although I typically will devise an article or blog rather that depicts the negative view based on a show and my bias this week I am devising a bit of a controversial standpoint due to my swayed opinion of this show. I am sure by now if you have not already watched an episode of American Horror Story you have at least heard about it! This show has had amazing ratings and I have not heard one negative thing from any viewers I have met or talked with about this show. Every week on Wednesday nights at 10 pm there is a new show aired. These shows become more and more confusing while attempting to tie into each other to explain the entire plot.

American Horror story is based on this old house in L.A. where many murders were committed and has left the house haunted with many dead and completely alive spirits. It is our job as the audience to depict what different elements are going on and try to tye together the main points of the show. As I begin to figure one thing out, or so I think, another incident happens to confuse me any more. What I truly love about this series is its use of many different characters and unusual elements us as viewers are not used to seeing. The show is based on the dead and how their spirits have stayed around this household and curse every new comer that tries to build a home there. The husband is possessed and held accountable for all his mishaps in his life and marriage while the wife is trying to cope while having many incidents in which leave her harmed or confused as to what paranormal activity is exactly going on. She becomes a bit crazy herself in trying to find all the answers. Many characters surrounding the house tie in along with many crazy spirits that will never leave the house. Do they stay or try and move while their marriage is faltering away?

The episodes become scarier and more intense every single week and in my opinion is not only holding all its viewers every week but certainly gaining more. I know many people whom make Wednesday nights their American horror story rendevous and almost like its a camp fire story watch the plot unfold. I chose to write about this show because of its fascination I am seeing among the public, myself included. And if people have not necessarily heard or watched this show may take it from me to tune in.

Another funny commodity of this show is there is a black man whom is all dressed every show and makes an appearance. He has not yet been seen or discovered by anyone yet, however the time is coming. On the American Horror Story website there has been many oppurtunities for at home scares. By sending in the household you live at and whom you are trying to scare the man in all black and a camera crew will come to your house and scare someone while filming the entire thing. This is another campaign the producer has factored in to draw in more attention and gain a repor with his viewers.

Tosh.O the good & the bad!

There is a lot to say about Tosh.O and I do not think I could even fit it into one blog. Are you a critic that enjoys laughing off Tosh.O or someone who does not enjoy his extreme offensive nature? Both of these descriptions are honestly my point of view. I have found myself tuning in and watching Tosh while laughing hysterically at some of his videos. While other times I will be watching his show and be extremely offended by some of the racial comments I hear come out of his mouth. I must admit this show was an intelligent idea because now a days most people find the rude comments to be hysterical.

For those of you who do not know Tosh.O it is a half hour show which airs once a week and shows different videos that he has found on the internet or has been sent into him on his website. These videos consist of obnoxious things people are partaking in such as stunts, music videos and simply foolish behavoir just to get on television. If Tosh can find something to say about it, HE WILL!

Now dont get me wrong. I highly enjoy watching Tosh because his tolerance and levels of humor are outstanding. He has no boundaries and is willing to say whatever he wants whether the cable channel allows him to or not. Things are hardly censored and when this show is on everyone in my household is silently watching his every move. Currently he is on a college tour and has been making jokes about individual schools and their reputation. I find most of this to be funny but sometimes his humor gets out of hand. This type of show is for the internet and people should choose to watch this as they please. By having this found on cable television only allows for children and adults who would not choose to watch this to be subjected to it at odd times. Obviously people do not have to watch this if they choose not to but you can almost not help it due to its hilarity.

All I am saying with Tosh.O is that it is not a show I would want aired on television for all to see because of the messages it is sending to our society. We as a society are stating that we are okay with slander and making fun of the very people whom make up our country. Between negative conotations and rude gestures people will get the idea that we are socially accepting of talking down to people and making them feel as a minority. This may seem a little dramatic but in the long scheme of things we have fought so hard for independence and equality and now we are taking steps backwards showing the world it is ok to be how we once were. If I believed people could simply watch this on television and never act upon it that would be one thing, but knowing people learn from television and the things they see only leaves me hopeless for our society. Monkey see monkey do.

Skins

One of the most controversial shows that has recently been produced and placed on television is Skins. This show is about a group of teenagers whom are trying to find their way in life while dealing with mixed up parents and choices they are not prepared to make. Although this explanation seems to follow a similiar pattern as others have the nudity and exposure these teenagers are shown under is improper. At this day and age it is becoming evidently aware that people and the lives of many are either starting too soon or following the wrong path, but when networks air this kind of behavoir it may have an opposite effect than they imagined. For example, when people claim they are influenced by outrageous stunt shows or scared because of horror stories you must look deeper and realize what people see they believe. Just because we hear about something as a society does not make it true or believable, but when especially teenagers in the same age group see this show and what the people are doing on it they believe it is socially acceptable to behave in the same manner. Now dont get me wrong when a person sees something it is not meaning they will act that way themselves but in my opinion it does mean they are more capable and likely to, yes.

Skins is not a show I would want my growing children to watch and honestly I do not feel as though it is comfortable and proper myself to be watching even with friends. In one episode a girls behind was shown after she interacted with another partner and it was not even bleeped out or covered at all. Although the world is changing and people are becoming more acceptable of words, text and pictures that would not have been proper to show years ago we must still realize as a nation children are growing up and what we convey to them is the messages they leave with. In case anybody is not sure of the show I am speaking of I would ask you to flick on the television and watch one show. I am almost positive you will be shocked by some of the things you see.

Dance Moms

Melissa and daughter Mackenzie                           Maddie

Dance Moms is a new show which has small children working themselves to the ground in order to become the next best dance and potentially land a position in a music video to jump start their career. Although this seems like a upbeat fun show for children and their talent it seems to me to have the same tone as Toddler Tiaras. These shows serve a good purpose, however they both convey signs of having not the best outlook for the children. Showing children discipline and determination are excellent characteristics for them to uphold, however in the wrong context I feel this can go terribly wrong. Children need to be able to live their childhood lives and not be run into the ground or feel it is the end of the world when they lose a competition. Some of the commercials for this show have been based around yelling, screaming and wrong doings between the parents and leaders of the show. This in my opinion is not in the best interest of the children and their dreams.

"Is Miller’s in-your-face approach good for her students, or is it too much? At what point does she cross the line, and who has the guts to stand up to her if she does? Are these “Dance Moms” living vicariously by pushing their kids too far? How happy are the students in this unusually competitive sport? What happens when they and their moms become competitive with each other? And, ultimately, who has what it takes? "  - myLifetime

This quote gives perfect explanation of how shows such as this are under extreme controversy. The hands on approach Miller, producer of this show, takes in order to keep the children in line seems to be extrememly extensive and over the top in my book. Although as stated before children need to know determination and discipline there is a fine line between the two. You must make sure you are keeping the best interest of the child and conveying your information properly to them versus yelling and continuing discipline in the same ways. Children do not have the understanding and capability to realize "what is best for them" at the time and something like this may push them away from their dreams.

Disney Channel & Nickelodeon Dramas

Some may think disney channel is suitable for their young children, however in recent years I have noticed a change in the story line and the topics chosen to discuss on national television. There has always been issues with certain television shows such as spongebob squarepants and the fairly odd parents, however even aside from preliminary messages that are being sent out the story line of life with these young children is a too mature for my own personal comfort zone. While babysitting a little girl, whom I have for years, I was told to not allow her to watch certain shows. After wondering to myself how come I tuned into these shows once the little girl went to bed. After watching a few minutes I realized what was going on. Drake and Josh were kissing girls and using fake ideas to get into clubs. This may not seem as big of an issue to us college students, however for a 7 year old girl whom does not even know what an ID is this can have a lot of negative impact on her views growing up.

When in these shows the boys were asking their parents for money to go out and using it at bars and also kissing girls on television for long periods of time made me extremely bothered. I knew that television was taking a turn for the worst when I noticed things on the network that seemed questionable. Usually things do not stand out to me but compared to what I watched as a child I was extremely surprised what the same aged children are able to see just by flicking on the power button.

Certain shows I feel everyone has heard there are small references and conclusions drawn from them such as Disney movies and spongebob squarepants. These shows apparently make references in which place subtle messages in the mind of the viewer. I have watched these shows trying to pick out these small inuendos, however are reluctant to find many. Some disney movies I have seen small things such as cloud formations and awkward phrases used in the dialog, but innappropriate symbols and words do not stand out to me as much. Until pointed out to me I never noticed just how many subliminal messages were in all the movies and shows I grew up watching. If these messages are real does anyone else see them until they are pointed out? Do you think they are intentionally placed there?  I would be interested to know if anyone has seen or heard these secret messages in any cartoon shows?
